In my work as a behaviourist, I do a lot of translating – the furrowed brow, the lip lick, lean against your leg, the way a tail carriage shifts by just a few degrees. But the most wonderful thing to be a part of, is not a command being followed, it is the moment we recognise what the dog has been trying to say, and it realises that too.
The dog that is “too reactive” is often just a dog that feels the world more deeply through insecurities for whatever reason.
That nudge for attention is not demanding, it’s an invitation to reconnect after a long day, and the dog feels your stress and emotions.
When your dog settles at your feet whilst you work, they aren’t just sleeping. They are choosing their safe space.
We focus so much on teaching dogs to understand us, but the real connection happens when we learn to speak Dog. When we stop looking for obedience and enjoy the partnership, the frustration you feel disappears.
You are not just a dog owner. You are a guardian, a partner and a primary source of safety in a loud, confusing world.
